The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 疫情下的亲子关系，其实疫情也只是一个引子，女儿的视角出发，感觉会比较偏日常化情节上没有太多波折，演员的演技也在线，就是结尾有点不明所以，但是这是真实改编的故事也没啥好说的。
瀑布，也是the falls，从高高的地方跌落、坠下，却成为一道心灵的绝佳风景。
和《阳光普照》同样描摹家庭内部的矛盾、裂痕，疫情题材只是外壳，母女俩由隔绝到治愈的轨迹脉络才是真正的表达所在。片中的不少隐喻值得玩味，结尾贾静雯的表演令人叹服。
在隱喻的層面做得還不夠極致，在日常生活的表現又過於呆板，可惜了一個很好的大背景下書寫家庭小故事的文本，究其原因是沒有完整統一的美學風格，大白話翻譯過來就是：沒想明白最終想要的是什麼。
疫情背景之下聚焦于家庭关系。房屋外因做防水工程而贴的蓝色帆布，使家中有了冷（暗）与暖（明）的二个空间。工程结束蓝布得以摘除，母女之间的关系也得到了缓和。离婚失去另一半，工资被减薪，母亲得了精神疾病，道出听到瀑布的声音。瀑布落下，即是一种下坠、坠落的过程。下坠到平地而又得到缓冲，结尾就是给我这样一种感觉，平和安详的。
三星半，贾静雯真的绝，为了最后一场戏多给半星也不是不也可以，同样都是98年的，刘浩存真的可以被王净按在地上摩擦，还有刘冠廷，尽管这里只有惊魂一瞥，但看过他其他几个作品，演的也真好，前段时间我看台湾的无声，都是年轻人或者中年演员，我总是奇怪，为什么人家的演技就那么好呢，内地的演员都在琢磨什么呢，
有点算计，而且是还有些别扭的精准，除了突如其来的结尾做一次开放式收尾，其他都是浅尝辄止的试探，《阳光普照》之后，对家庭题材的探索已经够了，建议钟孟宏换个题材继续发力。
前半段堪比恐怖片，和后半段的鸡汤有点割裂。
1要是全片都能维持前半部分的悬疑，2前后的翻转生硬，另贾静雯演技真好。
母女俩在疫情期间的生活，普通人的故事。母亲因过去的生活及离婚，心智受刺激而失去平衡，高三的女儿承担起照顾母亲的责任。当母亲从如瀑布般的过去声音中走出，女儿却又被现实中的瀑布冲击。影片整体基调把控很好，平静中有力量。演员的表演也不错，很少夸张的动作与表情。只是过于想点题了，显得啰嗦，其实最后的情节可以不要。
戴着口罩的观众看演员戴着口罩演戏，有点魔幻的感觉。应该是后疫情时代戴口罩最多的一部电影了，非常难受，憋得慌，加上前30分钟的悬疑剧情，让我觉得是一部恐怖片。给贾静雯加鸡腿
前面的悬念设计以及母女关系的拉扯都挺有趣的，但后面各种奇怪和狗血的剧情……
3.5 “每个人都有难堪的过去，只是大小不同而己。而且，末来会怎样，也没有人知道。”
3.5/5，借用空间的营造来打造社会的隐喻，贾静雯岂止是演家庭女强人，更是一个被结构性城市靓丽流水线压迫至思想崩溃的小资中产，当她紧绷的神经稍有松懈，她的房子、她的生活、她的人生，一切fall到无底深渊
真的有蛇，真的是瀑布。人生很长，和真正相爱的人度过就很值得。
一个小时之后才算渐入佳境。这次的主题不算多深刻 ，浅显易懂，一众熟面孔演员的客串，有当年贺岁片那味儿了；还有那些幽默的片段，有点构建钟孟宏电影宇宙的意思。少了林生祥，但有魏如萱和陈珊妮，差可告慰。
钟孟宏真的很戳我的点！看完莫名有种emo+感动的感觉。大家都演得很好，也很有感触。当蓝色大口罩摘下，阳光进来。就如同最近久久阴雨刺骨的天气，搭配刚刚出现的阳光。虽然只是微光，但终会阳光普照。
我愿称之为“疫情时代命题作文”（所以最后事故那段有点画蛇添足啊）。吊打内地同主题电影毫无疑问，但仍有差口气的感觉，大概是后半段的乐观向上很不钟孟宏吧。用贾静雯大概和阳光普照用许光汉思路差不多，都是追求颠覆既有形象以及将最美丽的角色打入最苦难的凡尘之反差感。PS：抉择太好听了。
